American Rapper Kanye West Faces Backlash Over Scheduled Performance in Slovakia
Controversial American rapper Kanye West, now known as Ye, is causing a stir with his upcoming performance at the Rubicon Festival in Bratislava, Slovakia. Scheduled for 20 July, this event marks his only confirmed live show in Europe this year. However, the announcement has been met with criticism due to West’s recent release of a song titled “Heil Hitler”, which glorifies Nazi leader Adolf Hitler.
Known for his eccentric behavior and controversial statements, the 24-time Grammy Award winner has been under fire for his antisemitic rhetoric in recent years. The release of “Heil Hitler” on the 80th anniversary of Nazi Germany’s defeat in World War II only added fuel to the fire.
Despite being described by festival organizers as a “hip-hop visionary, cultural icon, and controversial genius”, over 3,000 people have signed a petition calling for the cancellation of West’s appearance. Critics argue that his embrace of Nazi symbols and ideology is disrespectful to the memory of the victims of the regime.
In the music video for “Heil Hitler”, West is seen surrounded by Black men in animal skins and masks, chanting the song’s title as he raps about personal struggles and his custody battle with Kim Kardashian. The song concludes with a clip of Adolf Hitler’s speech, further fueling the controversy.
Aside from his music, West has also made headlines for his public support of former US president Donald Trump and fellow musician Sean Combs, who is facing legal troubles. The Rubicon Festival, where West is set to perform, will also feature other American rappers like Ken Carson, Offset, and Sheck Wes.
