Five individuals have been taken into custody for their involvement in the production of counterfeit currency, specifically fake GH¢200 and $100 notes amounting to GH¢2.3 million and $191,900, respectively. The accused individuals, who were brought before the Accra Circuit Court, include Shubham Sharma, the General Manager; James Mozu Bonaparte, a Graphic designer; Prince Owusu Ahenkorah, a photographer/video director; Jonathan Kwame Appiah, and Solomon Adjetey Adjei, both graphic designers.

Charges of conspiracy to commit a crime were leveled against all five individuals, with Sharma, Bonaparte, and Ahenkorah facing additional charges of possession of forged notes, while Appiah and Adjei were charged with uttering forged notes. The court, presided over by Samuel Bright Acquah, remanded the accused individuals into custody without taking their pleas, setting their next appearance date for July 3, 2025.

Chief Inspector Wisdom Alorwu, leading the prosecution, requested the court to keep the accused individuals in custody pending further investigations. The complainant in this case is reported to be a businessman based in Accra, whose identity has been withheld for privacy reasons.

The arrests were made following intelligence gathered on June 16, 2025. It is alleged that Sharma, the primary accused, stole $230,000 from the businessman’s safe and replaced the stolen money with counterfeit Ghanaian and US currency. A search of the company’s cash office in Adabrakah, Industrial Area, uncovered fake GH¢200 notes totaling GH¢2,318,000 and fake $100 notes amounting to $191,900. Sharma admitted to keeping the counterfeit notes in the office.

Further investigations revealed that Sharma paid Bonaparte GH¢25,000 for the fake GH¢ notes and GH¢15,000 for the counterfeit US dollars. Bonaparte and Ahenkorah were found to have conspired to supply Sharma with the counterfeit currency. A search of Ahenkorah led to the discovery of five bundles of fake GH¢200 notes. Ahenkorah implicated Appiah as his accomplice, stating that Appiah, the manager of the printing press, oversaw the production of the counterfeit notes. Appiah, in turn, led the police to Adjei, who was allegedly responsible for delivering the fake notes to Ahenkorah.
