WTA Introduces Ranking Protection for Players Opting for Fertility Procedures

In a groundbreaking move, the WTA Tour announced that female tennis players who decide to take a break from the sport to undergo fertility treatments such as freezing their eggs or embryos will have their rankings safeguarded.

The new rule applies to players ranked between one and 750 in singles or doubles who are absent from competition for a minimum of 10 consecutive weeks due to a “fertility protection procedure.”

Under this provision, players can use their protected ranking to enter up to three tournaments, excluding premier 1000 events.

The calculation of the special ranking will be based on the 12-week average of a player’s WTA ranking from eight weeks prior to the commencement of their time away from the sport.

Portia Archer, the CEO of WTA, highlighted the importance of this new initiative, stating, “We recognize the challenges that professional athletes face when balancing their careers with family planning. The introduction of the ‘Fertility Protection Special Entry Ranking Rule’ is part of our commitment to supporting players in making these significant life decisions.”

Earlier this year, the WTA partnered with Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF) to establish a maternity fund program. This program offers players up to 12 months of paid maternity leave and grants for fertility treatments.

The PIF, a global partner of the WTA Tour, is dedicated to providing comprehensive support to players as they navigate the complexities of building a family while pursuing their tennis careers.
