A group of around 70 law professors, attorneys, and justices recently lodged an ethics complaint against Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi with the Florida Bar. They accused her of engaging in “serious professional misconduct” and showing political bias in favor of President Donald Trump.
The complaint alleges that Bondi has been using the Department of Justice as a weapon by pressuring department lawyers to pursue the President’s political objectives aggressively. It claims that Bondi and her staff have compelled DOJ lawyers to violate their ethical obligations and engage in activities that they are ethically prohibited from doing. This behavior, according to the complaint, constitutes serious professional misconduct that undermines the rule of law and the administration of justice.
Despite the compelling evidence presented in the complaint, Francisco Digon-Greer, counsel for the Florida Bar, dismissed the complaint, citing that the institution does not investigate or prosecute sitting officers appointed under the U.S. Constitution while they are in office. This decision was met with disappointment from legal experts, including retired Florida Supreme Court justices Barbara J. Pariente and Peggy A. Quince, who had signed the complaint and called for an investigation and sanctions against Bondi.
This was the third complaint filed against Bondi by the group, all of which have been denied due to her current employment status. The authors of the complaint pointed out that states are responsible for overseeing who can practice law within their jurisdictions and disciplining them, emphasizing that lawyers who are public officials have a higher duty to maintain ethical standards.
The complaint highlighted three instances of alleged misconduct by Bondi, including the firing of immigration lawyer Erez Reuveni for telling the truth, the forced resignation of federal prosecutor Denise Cheung for refusing to open a criminal investigation without sufficient predication, and the DOJ’s efforts to dismiss New York City Mayor Eric Adams’ criminal indictment without prejudice. These examples demonstrate a pattern of behavior that prioritizes political interests over ethical standards.
In response to the complaint, a DOJ official dismissed the allegations as meritless, claiming that the Florida Bar had already rejected similar attempts to target Bondi. Bondi, a staunch Trump loyalist, has consistently aligned herself with the former president on controversial issues and has publicly vowed to root out individuals within the DOJ and FBI who oppose Trump.
Despite presenting herself as an independent prosecutor during her confirmation hearing, Bondi’s actions since taking office have raised concerns about political interference in the justice system. Trump’s recent directive for Bondi and other officials to investigate the Biden administration and his predecessor’s health further underscores the need for transparency and accountability within the Department of Justice.
