A shocking incident has come to light in the UK, where a female prison guard engaged in inappropriate behavior with an inmate at HM Prison Wealstun in West Yorkshire, northwest England. Megann Gibson, 26, has pleaded guilty to misconduct in public and possession of cannabis, and is set to be sentenced in August. The court heard that Gibson had phone sex with the inmate and even went to the extent of flooding his mother with over 900 messages to maintain their relationship.
Prosecutors revealed that Gibson allowed the inmate access to restricted areas of the prison and even visited his home address, all of which are serious breaches of conduct for a prison guard. The charges against her also mentioned that she had engaged in sexual communications via telephone with the inmate, further highlighting the severity of her actions.
It was also disclosed that Gibson was undergoing assessment for mental health conditions, including PTSD, related to a previous relationship. Despite being released on unconditional bail, she was cautioned by the judge that her offense is a grave matter that could potentially result in a prison sentence.
Wealstun prison has suspended Gibson, who is one of many female guards in the UK to lose their jobs due to improper relationships with inmates. In the past three years, 29 female prison guards have been dismissed for such misconduct, a significant increase compared to just nine cases between 2017 and 2019.
This incident is not an isolated one, as other female guards have faced similar allegations. Isabelle Dale, 23, was recently accused of having sexual relationships with two inmates simultaneously and conspiring with them to smuggle drugs into a high-security prison in Kent. Katerina Tatus was also suspended in March for allegedly having an inappropriate relationship with an inmate at HMP Feltham.
The case of Megann Gibson serves as a stark reminder of the importance of upholding professional boundaries in a prison environment and the consequences of breaching them.
