Lockheed Martin workers in Orlando and Denver have officially ratified a new five-year contract, bringing an end to a month-long strike that involved over 900 employees at the aerospace and defense giant. The United Auto Workers members stood firm in their negotiations, ultimately securing a fair deal that reflects their contribution to the company’s success.
Brandon Campbell, the director of UAW Region 4, expressed satisfaction with the outcome, stating, “This was a hard fight, but UAW members stood up to win our fair share of the profits that we generate. That raises the standard for workers everywhere.” The new agreement includes pay increases averaging 19.3% and raises the wage floor for new hires from $15 to $20 an hour. Additionally, workers will reach the top of the pay scale in a shorter timeframe compared to the previous proposal.
The strike, which began on May 1 after the rejection of an initial contract offer, impacted workers at Lockheed’s Space and Missiles and Fire Control (MFC) divisions. These divisions play crucial roles in developing satellites, space exploration systems, missile defense, tactical missiles, hypersonic weapons, and air defense systems. The collaboration with NASA on space missions further highlights the significance of the work carried out by these employees.
In a statement, Lockheed Martin expressed its satisfaction with the new contract, emphasizing the company’s commitment to supporting national security missions. The contract extension until April 11, 2030, provides stability for both the workers and the company to continue their important work in serving customers and advancing technological innovation.
The successful resolution of the labor dispute underscores the importance of fair wages and benefits for workers in the aerospace and defense industry. By standing together and negotiating for their fair share, the UAW members have set a positive example for workers across the country. As the industry continues to evolve and face new challenges, collaborative efforts between labor and management will be crucial in ensuring a sustainable and prosperous future for all stakeholders involved.
