Illegal mining activities by Chinese nationals in Plateau State have raised concerns and prompted action by the authorities. Liang Quin Yong, Wang Huajie, Zhong Jiajing, and Long Kechong were recently convicted by the Federal High Court in Jos for unlawfully mining solid minerals in the region. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) played a crucial role in apprehending these individuals, who were found guilty of illegal purchase and possession of mineral resources.

As a result of their conviction, the Chinese miners were sentenced to five years in prison or a fine of ₦1 million each. They were also deported and permanently banned from re-entering Nigeria. Additionally, the court ordered the forfeiture of all proceeds from their illegal activities, including a significant sum of ₦134.87 million recovered from Liang Quin Yong. Furthermore, all mineral resources seized during the investigation were forfeited, along with an administrative fine of ₦16.3 million for failing to report a financial transaction within the required timeframe.

Plateau State boasts a wealth of mineral resources, including tin, columbite, tantalite, wolfram, kaolin, zircon, uranium, lead, iron ore, coking coal, gold, and silver. These resources have been historically significant and contribute significantly to Nigeria’s mining sector. However, illegal mining activities have plagued the state, damaging the environment and fueling insecurity in local communities.

In response to the rampant illegal mining operations, Governor Caleb Mutfwang issued Executive Order 001, which prohibits all mining activities in the state. This decisive action underscores the government’s commitment to restoring control over its mineral wealth and safeguarding the interests of local communities.

The case of the Chinese miners in Plateau State serves as a stark reminder of the risks associated with illegal mining and the importance of upholding laws and regulations to protect the environment and promote sustainable mining practices. By cracking down on illegal mining activities and enforcing stringent penalties, authorities aim to deter future offenders and preserve the state’s valuable mineral resources for the benefit of all stakeholders.
