Samuel Atta Akyea, the legal representative for former National Signals Bureau head Kwabena Adu Boahene, has announced that he will no longer be in communication with Attorney General Dr. Dominic Ayine. This decision comes as a result of concerns regarding potential leaks and political manipulation of their discussions.
Following a court hearing today, where an Accra High Court ruled for his client to remain in EOCO custody for seven working days, Atta Akyea expressed his unease about the possibility of private conversations being exploited for political gain. The case has been adjourned to May 13 for further proceedings.
The seasoned lawyer emphasized the need for caution in his interactions, stating, “I’m careful lest I have a phone conversation, and somebody says that, oh, I’m trying to romance the Attorney General. There’s a precedent, and I’ve been around long enough.” He further explained, “I don’t want to talk to the Attorney General, although we are very good friends, lest somebody might misinterpret it, and somebody might even go and leak a tape, tying it to hobnobbing with the Attorney General for some advantage. That is why I’m very quiet about it.”
When asked if he had completely cut off communication with Dr. Ayine, Atta Akyea confirmed, “I believe so.” He added, “For now, I don’t believe I should be discussing anything with the Attorney General. And if there is anything he wants us to do outside of trial, maybe he should find a better way of doing it. I’m scared that the kind of propaganda in the public space can put any kind of spin or interpretation on any engagement. So I’m very, very careful.”
Atta Akyea has publicly criticized his client’s prosecution, labeling it as a “travesty of justice.” He expressed his concerns about the impact on individual liberties, stating, “That is a travesty of justice, playing with the liberty of the individual,” during his interaction with journalists at the court premises.
It is evident that Atta Akyea is taking a cautious approach to his interactions with the Attorney General, prioritizing the protection of his client’s interests and avoiding any potential misinterpretation or manipulation of their discussions. The unfolding legal proceedings will continue to be closely monitored as the case progresses.
