PDP Summons Emergency Meeting Over Mass Defections

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is currently grappling with a wave of defections that are posing a significant threat to the party’s stability. In response to this crisis, the National Working Committee (NWC) has called for an emergency meeting scheduled for Tuesday to address the growing exodus of party members.

Among the notable defections that have rocked the party are those of former Vice Presidential candidate Ifeanyi Okowa, Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, and the entire PDP structure in Delta State. Delta State has traditionally been a stronghold for the party, making these defections particularly impactful.

The departure of key party members, including lawmakers like Oluwole Oke from Osun State, has further weakened the PDP’s position ahead of the 2027 general elections. The party is now faced with the daunting task of shoring up its support base and regaining momentum in the political arena.

A high-ranking party official, speaking on condition of anonymity, disclosed that the upcoming NWC meeting will focus on devising strategies to stem the tide of defections and revitalize the party’s prospects. The PDP has been grappling with internal strife both before and after the 2023 elections, with Acting National Chairman Umar Damagum coming under increasing scrutiny since taking over from former Chairman Iyorchia Ayu.

Internal discord within the NWC, particularly regarding the National Secretary role, has further exacerbated tensions within the party. As the PDP navigates this turbulent period, it must find a way to unify its ranks, address grievances, and present a united front to regain the trust and support of the electorate.

The PDP’s future hinges on its ability to navigate these challenges and emerge stronger and more cohesive in the face of mounting defections and internal divisions. The outcome of the NWC meeting will be closely watched as a barometer of the party’s resilience and capacity to weather the current storm.
