The SA Athletics Championships are set to kick off in Potchefstroom, and despite some elite stars focusing on the Diamond League series, there will still be plenty of excitement on the track. Here are six athletes to keep an eye on during the three-day event:

1. Bayanda Walaza: The young sensation will be competing in the 100m and 200m sprints, aiming to build on his impressive performances at the Olympics and World U20 Championships. With Akani Simbine absent, Walaza will face tough competition from Wayde van Niekerk and Benji Richardson.

2. Prudence Sekgodiso: Fresh off her world indoor 800m title win, Sekgodiso is the favorite for the national crown in the two-lap race. She will be challenged by Charne Swart in a bid to defend her titles in the 800m and 1,500m events.

3. Viwe Jingqi: The speedster will look to reclaim her title as SA’s fastest woman in the 100m and 200m sprints after facing setbacks due to injuries. With a recent loss to Hannah Hope Vermaak, Jingqi will be eager to prove herself on the track.

4. Tumi Ramokgopa: The talented 17-year-old is a favorite for the SA 100m hurdles title in the absence of Marione Fourie. Ramokgopa will also be aiming for a podium finish in the 400m hurdles, facing tough competition from Zeney Geldenhuys and Rogail Joseph.

5. Njabulo Mbatha: The young talent in the men’s 400m hurdles event, Mbatha, is expected to challenge for the national senior title after an impressive performance at the World U20 Championships. With a personal best of 49.06 seconds, Mbatha will be a strong contender in the race.

6. Luvo Manyonga: Despite unlikely chances of reclaiming the SA long jump title, Manyonga’s return to competitive action after a four-year hiatus due to drug addiction is commendable. The SA record holder will be looking to showcase his resilience and determination on the field.

As these athletes gear up for the SA Athletics Championships, fans can expect thrilling performances and fierce competition on the track in Potchefstroom. Stay tuned for updates on these talented individuals as they aim to make their mark in South African athletics.
