Google has recently confirmed that it utilized a set of upgraded AI models to detect and suspend malicious advertisers. In 2024, the tech giant suspended a staggering 39.2 million malicious advertisers, showcasing the power of artificial intelligence in combating online scams and spam.

The release of Google’s 2024 Ads Safety Report shed light on the significant increase in suspended accounts and the decreased presence of malicious ads online. With over 5.1 billion ads blocked or removed and an additional 9.1 billion restricted, Google’s efforts to protect users from digital scams and fake news have been commendable.

In a time where online safety is paramount, Google’s use of AI to tackle issues like AI-generated impersonation scams and political ad transparency has been crucial. With over 700,000 account suspensions due to impersonation scams and the removal of over 10 million unverified election ads, Google has shown its commitment to safeguarding users worldwide.

Enhanced AI models, including more than 50 large language models (LLMs), were deployed to enforce ad policies in 2024. This resulted in a significant increase in suspended ad accounts compared to the previous year. The use of LLMs, which require less data to make determinations, has proven effective in combating fraudulent activities and evolving scam tactics.

Google’s emphasis on transparency and proactive prevention comes at a critical time when trust, safety, and transparency are essential in the digital landscape. By updating its policies, assembling a global team of experts, and taking down over 700,000 scam-related advertiser accounts, Google has made significant strides in protecting users from misinformation and fraud.

With nearly half of the world’s population heading to the polls in 2024, Google also expanded election ad transparency efforts, ensuring that political advertisers verify their identities and disclose payment information. Over 10 million election-related ads were removed globally for failing to meet these standards, highlighting Google’s commitment to a trustworthy online environment.

In South Africa and beyond, online safety remains a top priority for users, businesses, and content creators. Google’s efforts in 2024 have not only protected users from scams and fake news but have also supported small businesses, creators, and publishers in benefiting from a safe and accessible internet.

As the digital landscape continues to evolve, Google’s proactive approach to online safety sets a standard for other platforms to follow. By leveraging AI technology and prioritizing transparency, Google is paving the way for a more secure and trustworthy online experience for users worldwide.
