The Forestry Commission in the Western Region has achieved a significant milestone in the fight against illegal mining activities. Nana Poku Bosompim, the Regional Manager, recently oversaw the successful dismantling of several illegal settlements that served as operational bases for unlawful mining operations.
In a recent interview on JoyNews’ Newsfile, Mr. Bosompim confirmed that coordinated efforts led to the complete destruction of slum areas such as Abrewa Ne Nkran, Jerusalem, and another settlement near Wassa Nkran. These locations had been identified as major security concerns by his predecessor, and despite three previous demolition attempts, inhabitants persistently rebuilt the settlements. Mr. Bosompim made it his top priority to permanently remove these illegal settlements.
Since assuming his role just two months ago, Mr. Bosompim and his team have made significant progress in eradicating these illegal bases. He emphasized the importance of protecting the forested areas by eliminating these slums, which not only attracted Ghanaian nationals but also miners from eight other West African countries.
However, the battle is far from over, as Mr. Bosompim noted that attempts to rebuild the settlements were already underway shortly after the demolition. To prevent any reoccupation, the Forestry Commission has implemented enhanced monitoring and surveillance measures. The goal is to ensure that these illegal camps are never rebuilt and that illegal mining activities are permanently eradicated from the region.
The new strategy includes systematic patrols and increased surveillance to deter any attempts to reestablish illegal mining operations. By staying vigilant and proactive, the Forestry Commission aims to safeguard the region’s natural resources and prevent further environmental degradation caused by illegal mining activities.
