Why Gabon's coup leader is bucking a trend by embracing democracy

After more than five decades of rule by the Bongo family, the people of Gabon are heading to the polls to choose a new head of state. The bloodless coup that took place 19 months ago paved the way for a new era in Gabonese politics, with Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema emerging as the overwhelming favourite in the upcoming election.

Oligui Nguema, a former commander of the elite Republican Guard, has transitioned from a military leader to a politician, garnering popularity among a population eager for change. His campaign slogan, “C’BON”, reflects the optimism and hope for a new beginning in Gabon.

His main challenger in the election is Alain-Claude Bilie-By-Nze, the last prime minister under the ousted President Ali Bongo. Despite facing competition from other candidates, Oligui Nguema is expected to secure an outright majority in the first round of voting.

If elected, Oligui Nguema will have a seven-year mandate to implement reforms and development projects in Gabon. As an established oil producer and a major exporter of manganese, Gabon has significant economic potential that can be harnessed for the benefit of its people.

The peaceful transition of power in Gabon stands in stark contrast to the political turmoil and instability that have plagued many African countries. Oligui Nguema’s ability to navigate this transition with minimal resistance speaks to his leadership skills and broad base of support.

Since coming to power, Oligui Nguema has focused on building international goodwill and strengthening diplomatic relations, particularly with France, Gabon’s former colonial power. His government has also undertaken public works projects and initiatives to boost the economy and create jobs for the population.

However, the road ahead for Oligui Nguema will not be without challenges. Balancing the conservation of Gabon’s rich biodiversity with the economic pressures to exploit natural resources will require careful planning and strategic decision-making.

Urban populations in Gabon, particularly in the capital city of Libreville, are in need of improved services and job opportunities. Addressing these social and economic concerns will be crucial for Oligui Nguema’s administration to maintain public support and trust.

As he prepares to lead Gabon into a new era, Oligui Nguema will need to navigate these complex challenges and fulfill the high expectations of the Gabonese people. The upcoming election will be a critical moment in determining the country’s future trajectory under his leadership.
