Google has unveiled a groundbreaking technology that can accurately predict global precipitation within a 5km radius every 15 minutes for the next 12 hours, all in under one minute. Known as “Nowcasting” on Search, this initiative is a game-changer for Africa, where traditional weather forecasting faces challenges due to limited infrastructure and data availability.

The concept of Nowcasting was first witnessed by The Citizen during a visit to Google’s research facilities in Accra, Ghana in December 2023. This month, Google officially launched Nowcasting on Search, utilizing advanced AI technology to provide highly localized and immediate weather updates.

This development is crucial for regions frequently affected by unpredictable weather patterns, as it offers users real-time, minute-by-minute predictions to help them make informed decisions about their daily activities and safety.

Google’s Nowcasting system combines satellite imagery and AI to deliver accurate forecasts with unprecedented precision. By leveraging AI technology, Google has been able to provide users with detailed insights into when and where they can expect rain over the next few hours.

The company’s AI-powered Nowcasting model, MetNet, utilizes satellite data and ground observations to generate state-of-the-art precipitation forecasts in data-sparse regions around the world. This innovative technology can predict global precipitation with remarkable accuracy, enabling users to plan their activities with confidence.

One of the key components of weather forecasting is dense ground radar, which is lacking in many parts of the world, including Africa. Google’s Nowcasting system addresses this challenge by using AI and satellite observations to fill the gaps where radar data is unavailable, overcoming limitations in data-sparse regions.

Nowcasting on Search is currently live for users in Africa, providing more precise weather information than ever before. Moving forward, Google plans to engage with local scientific communities to enhance forecast accuracy globally and expand the technology to regions with limited radar infrastructure.

Google Research Africa, based in Accra and Nairobi, is collaborating with local experts to develop solutions that address societal needs. From improving weather predictions to projects like Open Buildings, which maps structures for disaster response and urban planning, Google is committed to leveraging AI to make a meaningful impact on real-world challenges.

In conclusion, Google’s Nowcasting technology represents a significant advancement in weather forecasting, particularly in regions with limited infrastructure. By harnessing the power of AI and satellite observations, Google is revolutionizing the way we access and interpret weather information, ultimately empowering individuals to make informed decisions in the face of unpredictable weather events.
