The Warriors cricket team from the Eastern Cape has faced a major setback after being stripped of their place in the SA 1Day Cup play-offs. This decision was made by Cricket South Africa (CSA) after the team failed to meet the required number of black players in their starting XI during a match against the Dolphins in Durban on 16 February 2025.
According to CSA, the Warriors breached Clause 3.2.2 of the CSA Administrative Conditions, which mandates teams to have a minimum of three black African players and six players of color in the playing XI. Despite winning the match by 116 runs, the Warriors only had two black African players, Andile Mokgakane and Sinethemba Qeshile, in their lineup.
As a result of this breach, the Warriors have been docked match points and fined by CSA. They will forfeit all match points from the game against the Dolphins, with the opposition being awarded four match points. Additionally, a monetary fine has been imposed on the team, with 50% of the amount due before the end of the current financial year and the remaining 50% suspended for five years.
The sanctions have cost the Warriors their place in the 1Day Cup play-offs, leading to a change in the competition’s final standings. The Dolphins, who now move to second place on the log, will host the Titans in the upcoming play-off match.
It was reported that the Warriors, under the guidance of coach Robin Peterson, could have avoided the sanctions by appealing to CSA due to a potential injury concern. However, the team chose not to pursue this route, resulting in the harsh penalty.
Moving forward, the Warriors will need to reassess their team selection policies to ensure compliance with transformation requirements set out by CSA. This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of diversity and inclusion in sports, and the consequences of failing to meet these standards.
