Lesotho, a small African nation often overlooked, gained unexpected attention when U.S. President Donald Trump criticized foreign aid spending during his address to Congress. Trump singled out Lesotho, citing an $8 million allocation for LGBTQI+ promotion in the country, calling it an "appalling waste." In response, Lesotho’s Foreign Minister, Lejone Mpotjoane, described Trump’s comments as "quite insulting" and extended an invitation for him to visit the country and witness its significance firsthand.

Here are 10 fascinating facts about Lesotho that set it apart from other countries:

1) The Kingdom in the Sky: Lesotho is the only country in the world entirely above 1,000 meters in elevation, earning it the nickname "The Kingdom in the Sky." Its high altitude impacts the climate and agriculture, with cold winters and limited arable land.

2) Landlocked by South Africa: Completely surrounded by South Africa, Lesotho faces challenges and benefits from this landlocked status. Despite deep ties with South Africa, Lesotho maintains its distinct culture and governance.

3) Water Exporter: Lesotho exports water to South Africa through the Lesotho Highlands Water Project, benefiting both countries but facing criticism for displacing communities.

4) Exporter of Jeans to the US: Lesotho is a major exporter of jeans to the United States, contributing to Africa’s textile industry.

5) Highest HIV Rates: Lesotho has the second-highest HIV prevalence globally, with significant U.S. support for prevention and treatment programs.

6) Highest Ski Resort: Afriski, Lesotho’s ski resort in the Maluti Mountains, is the highest in sub-Saharan Africa.

7) Constitutional Monarchy: Led by King Letsie III, Lesotho is a constitutional monarchy with an elected government.

8) Africa’s Highest Dams: The Katse Dam, part of the Lesotho Highlands Water Project, is one of Africa’s highest dams.

9) Highest Suicide Rate: Lesotho tragically holds the highest age-adjusted suicide rate globally, surpassing the global average.

10) Strong Horse-Riding Culture: Horses and donkeys are essential modes of transportation in Lesotho’s mountainous terrain, with the Basotho pony known for its endurance and agility.

These unique aspects of Lesotho showcase a country rich in culture, natural beauty, and challenges that set it apart on the African continent.
