The African Development Bank Announces Five Candidates for Presidential Election

The African Development Bank (AfDB) has recently revealed the five candidates who will be vying for the position of president in the upcoming election scheduled for May 29, 2025. These candidates include Amadou Hott from Senegal, Samuel Munzele Maimbo from Zambia, Sidi Ould Tah from Mauritania, Abbas Mahamat Tolli from Chad, and Bajabulile Swazi Tshabalala from South Africa. The election will determine the successor to the current president, Akinwumi Adesina, as his term comes to an end in May 2025.

In the AfDB, the president is elected by the Board of Governors for a renewable five-year term. Candidates must secure at least 50.01% of the total votes from both regional and non-regional member countries to win the position. It is expected that regional blocs such as ECOWAS, SADC, and COMESA will have a significant influence on the outcome of the election.

This announcement has generated widespread interest and anticipation as the AfDB prepares for a new leadership transition. The candidates bring diverse backgrounds and experiences to the table, each offering unique perspectives on how to drive the bank’s mission forward in the coming years.

As the election date draws near, stakeholders within the African development community are closely watching the developments and engaging with the candidates to understand their visions for the AfDB’s future. The new president will inherit a bank that plays a crucial role in financing development projects across the continent, making this election a pivotal moment for the organization.

Stay tuned for updates on the AfDB presidential election as the candidates campaign and present their platforms to the Board of Governors. The outcome of this election will shape the direction of one of Africa’s most important financial institutions for the next five years.
