The Amasaman Circuit Court recently handed down a three-year sentence in hard labour to a mason named Senyo Awuku for causing irreversible damage to a Donfeng Ex-Box car belonging to Hisense Company Limited, valued at US$35,900. Awuku admitted to unlawfully damaging the vehicle and was convicted accordingly. However, he denied allegations of breaking into the home of Mr Gad Ebenezer Afranie Kisi, the complainant, to steal the vehicle, as well as an HP laptop computer worth GH₵4,300.00 and GH₵4,000.00 in cash.

Chief Inspector Salifu Nashiru provided details to the court, stating that the complainant, who worked at Hisense Company Ltd, resided in Danchira Ocloo Farms, while Awuku lived in Hobor, a suburb of Accra. On January 30, 2025, the complainant parked his Donfeng Ex-Box car with registration number GT 4955-24 in his house along with his laptop, cash, and car key. The following morning, he discovered the items missing and reported the theft to the Danchira Police.

After posting pictures of the stolen car on social media, the complainant received a tip that the car was spotted in Amasaman-Three Junction. Upon reaching the location, Awuku, who was in possession of the vehicle, attempted to flee but crashed the car into a container at Ademan. He abandoned the vehicle and attempted to escape on foot but was apprehended by bystanders and handed over to the police.

Awuku expressed remorse for his actions during his plea for clemency, while prosecution emphasized the irreparable damage done to the vehicle. The court took into account both mitigating factors and the severity of the damage in its sentencing. It ruled for the return of the stolen items and scheduled Awuku to appear in court again on March 13, 2025, to face charges of unlawful entry and theft.
