Elon Musk's DOGE Seeks Access To US Tax System: Report
SHARE

Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) is causing concern with its request for access to a system containing detailed financial information about millions of Americans held by the US tax office, according to reports from US media outlets.

Led by Musk, the richest man in the world, President Donald Trump has been on a mission to cut down on public spending that is considered wasteful or goes against his policies. The latest request from DOGE officials is for broad access to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) systems, property, and datasets, including the Integrated Data Retrieval System (IDRS). This system, which typically has very limited access, provides instantaneous visual access to specific taxpayer accounts, as stated by the IRS.

Although the request had not been granted as of Sunday evening, it has raised red flags within the government and among privacy experts. Granting Musk access to sensitive taxpayer data is seen as a potentially dangerous move, with concerns about privacy and security. Elizabeth Laird, a former state privacy officer now with the Center for Democracy and Technology, expressed worries about the implications of sharing such sensitive information with the federal government.

White House spokesperson Harrison Fields defended the request, citing the need to address waste, fraud, and abuse within the government system. Fields emphasized the importance of identifying and rectifying issues directly through access to the system, stating that DOGE will continue to expose any fraudulent activities uncovered.

The potential implications of granting DOGE access to private taxpayer data have sparked a debate over the balance between government transparency and individual privacy rights. As the situation unfolds, it remains to be seen how the government will navigate the delicate balance between accountability and data security.
