The European Union’s representatives in South Africa have extended a message of solidarity to the country in the midst of a growing crisis with the United States. The ambassadors of France, Germany, and Italy, along with the EU’s deputy ambassador, released a video expressing their shared commitment to constitutionalism and multi-lateralism with South Africa.

Speaking at an event in Pretoria under the theme “United in Diversity,” the ambassadors highlighted the similarities between the EU and South Africa. German ambassador Andreas Pesche emphasized the shared commitment to multi-lateralism, while Italian ambassador Alberto Vecchi and French ambassador David Martinon underscored the belief in equality, constitutional rights, and a non-racial, non-sexist democracy.

The EU’s deputy ambassador, Pencho Garrido Ruiz, emphasized the shared values of solidarity, equality, and sustainability between the EU and South Africa, particularly in light of South Africa’s G20 presidency agenda. He assured South Africa of the EU’s support during the G20 summit and beyond.

The message from the EU ambassadors comes in response to US President Donald Trump’s recent suspension of donor funding to South Africa. Trump alleged racial oppression and accused South Africa of supporting Iran’s military and nuclear ambitions. The White House also cited South Africa’s stance on the conflict in Gaza and its accusations against Israel as reasons for the sanction.

President Cyril Ramaphosa has rejected Trump’s claims, stating that South Africa will not be bullied into changing its policies. Ramaphosa is preparing a delegation to travel to Washington and other capitals to address the situation and garner support for South Africa’s G20 presidency.

Despite the challenges posed by the US sanctions, the EU remains steadfast in its support for South Africa’s commitment to democracy, constitutional rights, and international cooperation. The message of solidarity from the EU ambassadors reflects the strong ties and shared values between the EU and South Africa, as both regions work towards a more just and equitable world.
