Sam Nujoma, the revered leader who fought against apartheid and played a pivotal role in the liberation struggle for Namibian independence, has passed away at the age of 95 in Windhoek. Known as the “founding father” of Namibia, Nujoma leaves behind a legacy of resilience and dedication to the cause of freedom.
His death marks the end of an era for southern Africa, as he joins the ranks of other liberation heroes such as Nelson Mandela and Robert Mugabe who have also left us. Nujoma served as the president of Namibia for 15 years following independence in 1990, leaving a lasting impact on the country’s political landscape.
While Nujoma has been hailed for his efforts in promoting national reconciliation with his motto of “One Namibia, One Nation”, his tenure also highlighted the trend of liberation parties holding onto power for extended periods post-independence. The South West Africa People’s Organisation (Swapo), which Nujoma led, has maintained its stronghold on the government since independence, winning last year’s election with a significant majority.
President Nangolo Mbumba of Namibia paid tribute to Nujoma, acknowledging his role in inspiring the nation to stand up and take charge of their destiny. Nujoma spent nearly three decades in exile, rallying support for the liberation movement and garnering international backing for Namibia’s independence struggle.
Born in 1929 in Ovamboland, Nujoma grew up in a humble farming family and later ventured into activism against apartheid labor laws. His involvement in the liberation movement led to his arrest and subsequent exile, where he continued to champion the cause for freedom. Nujoma’s efforts culminated in the armed struggle against South African forces in the 1960s, marking a turning point in Namibia’s fight for self-determination.
Upon his return to Namibia in 1989, Nujoma was hailed as a hero and went on to win the presidential election with overwhelming support. Throughout his time in office, he focused on advancing women’s and children’s rights, although his stance on homosexuality was met with controversy.
As Namibia grapples with persistent inequality and economic challenges, the passing of Nujoma has left a void in the nation’s leadership. The presidency has declared a period of national mourning to honor his legacy and commemorate his contributions to the country’s history.
In remembrance of Sam Nujoma, let us reflect on his unwavering commitment to freedom and justice, and strive to uphold the principles of unity and progress that he embodied.
