President Trump Signs Executive Order Barring Transgender Athletes from Women’s Sports
US President Donald Trump made good on his promise to sign an executive order on Wednesday, prohibiting transgender athletes from competing in women’s sports. This move is part of his radical right-wing agenda since returning to office for a second term.
The White House announced that Trump would sign the “No Men in Women’s Sports Executive Order” in a ceremony at 3:00 pm (2000 GMT).
Deputy Press Secretary Anna Kelly stated, “Today, President Trump will deliver on his promise to protect women’s sports!”
Kelly asserted that the order would put an end to the “dangerous and unfair participation of men in women’s sports.”
During his campaign, Trump frequently addressed the issue of transgender athletes and even criticized Democratic opponent Kamala Harris for her stance on transgender rights.
Since taking office on January 20, Trump has issued several executive orders targeting gender non-conforming individuals. He has previously signed orders banning transgender troops from the military and restricting gender transition procedures for individuals under 19.
This latest executive order comes after the Republican-led House of Representatives passed a bill in January that severely limits transgender athletes from participating in female sports.
Republicans have been vocal in their opposition to Democrats on transgender issues, especially concerning youth and sports, as part of a broader cultural battle over LGBTQ rights.
Although transgender individuals make up a small percentage of the population, their increased visibility in the US has sparked debates on gender norms and fairness, with many conservatives advocating for the protection of women’s sports.
