AmaZulu head coach Arthur Zwane has made a commitment to provide psychological support for Ghanaian goalkeeper Richard Ofori following his critical mistakes in the recent 2-2 draw against Kaizer Chiefs on February 4, 2025.
Despite Ofori’s errors, which included an unfortunate own goal that led to both of Chiefs’ goals, Zwane expressed his understanding and determination to help the goalkeeper recover mentally from the setback. Speaking to SuperSport TV after the game, Zwane stated, “He made those two crucial mistakes, both of which we know he could have easily saved. Now, as coaches, it’s our job to help him psychologically because we need him. He’s been fantastic for the team.”
Zwane also acknowledged Ofori’s strong performance in the first half, which kept AmaZulu in the game, and reassured that the team would rally behind the goalkeeper during this challenging time. He mentioned, “Unfortunately, football is a game of mistakes. As I said earlier, he kept us in the game in the first half. Sometimes when the pressure mounts, you are bound to crack. He made those two crucial mistakes, both of which we know he’d usually save and make look easy.”
Since joining AmaZulu, Ofori has managed to keep three clean sheets in 11 league appearances. The focus now is on helping the goalkeeper regain his confidence, with the understanding that his mental well-being is just as crucial as his physical form.
Ofori’s move to AmaZulu FC came after being released by Orlando Pirates at the end of the 2023/24 season. Despite this recent setback, Ofori has shown his importance to the team by keeping clean sheets in key matches. His previous experience with Maritzburg United and Orlando Pirates, where he won multiple trophies, solidifies his reputation as a key player in the league.
The road to recovery for Richard Ofori will undoubtedly be challenging, but with the unwavering support of his coach, teammates, and fans, he is sure to bounce back stronger than ever.
