The world pulled their popcorn buckets close for Tuesday’s first (second) presidential debate between Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump. Indeed, we were left with equal parts entertainment and disgust…along with a meme-worthy bit about…eating household pets??
News publications and pundits have spent the hours since breaking down the debate to determine which candidate had the upper hand on certain issues, but Black folks with functioning eyes and ears recognize the reality: Harris beat Trump like a snare drum.
But even though the floor of Philly’s National Constitution Center was sufficiently wiped, folks are still not happy that Trump got in the last word.
“I hate that Trump got the last word. That was absolutely ridiculous,” one tweet stated in response to the closing arguments in the debate.
Others are wondering why Trump got the last word after almost every question that was asked during the debate.
“Trump always gets to say the last words. Why?? Still getting cooked and called out though. Just sad American politics have stooped this low because he’s not even worthy. I mean look at him rambling,” another critique explained.
The reason Trump got the last word is simple: He won the coin toss. Each year candidates participate in a coin toss — this year it was virtual — and Trump won and chose to close out the debate.
Still, it appears on almost every issue spoken on Trump got the last word in questions about the economy, abortion rights, immigration/border control, climate change, health care and the list goes on for each subject he interjected on, according to Politico.
In his final remarks, Trump questioned why Vice President Harris hasn’t acted on any of the things promised in her campaign during her time as Vice President.
“She just started by saying she’s going to do this she’s going to do that. She’s going to do all these wonderful things. Why hasn’t she done it? She’s been there for three-and-a-half-years,” Trump stated during the debate.
Now would be the perfect time to point out that the role of the vice president is to serve as the President of the Senate, according to the United States Senate. They have the sole power to break tie vote in the Senate, but are not allowed to push their own agenda…that’s the role of the President of the United States.
Indeed, Harris stated during the debate that she’s not Joe Biden. While they do have similarities to their campaign goals, they have slight differences In how they plan to deal with the Israel-Gaza conflict, climate change and student debt forgiveness.
Trump has announced he will not do any more debates with Vice President Harris after she requested a second round shortly after the original debate…which is probably in his best interests.
