The 2024 Paris Olympics may be over, but that doesn’t mean the excitement has completely dwindled. Many fans, including famous ones like Flavor Flav are already looking ahead to the 2028 Los Angeles Games. The Public Enemy legend is making it clear he wants to be one of the torchbearers for the next Summer Olympics.
While appearing on the “Potlickin’” podcast, the “Fight the Power” rapper made his intentions clear, saying, “Guess what? I got a feeling I might be one of them. I put in my bid already.”
Flav was seen everywhere at the Paris Games. As a loyal supporter of the U.S. team, he was a mainstay at women’s water polo. He was also one of the many celebrities who showed up to watch Simone Biles compete for multiple medals. Plus, after the Games were over, he supported Olympians who weren’t on the front of cereal boxes.
The only person who was more active than him at the Olympics was Snoop Dogg, whom Flav referenced in his quest to become a torchbearer.
“I said, ‘If Snoop can carry the torch in Paris — come on, man — Flav can carry that bad boy in L.A.,’ and Snoop did a fantastic job, man,” Flav said.
Honestly, this kind of feels like a no brainer.
His enthusiastic Red Lobster commercials and Olympics presence has Flavor Flav in the midst of a pop culture resurgence. Now is the perfect time for the L.A. organizing committee to take advantage of his higher profile. We already know the Powers that Be will probably lean into the Hollywood element of the setting and we’ll see a lot of celebrity involvement.
Since he’s clearly a Team USA supporter and is serious about the gig, Flav should get to live out his Olympic dreams. According to the official Olympics website, prospective torchbearers must go through the organizing committee, but since the “Politickin’” podcast is co-hosted by California Gov. Gavin Newsom, he’s certainly making his pitch in the right place.
In the next four years, we’re going to hear rumors and speculation about every famous name in Hollywood being involved in the Olympics somehow. We want to make sure Black stars are represented, and we want people who have genuine love for the Olympic team to be front and center. Flavor Flav definitely meets those standards.
If you’re missing all the Olympic fun, you don’t have to wait four years, because the 2024 Paralympics just started. They’re currently airing on NBC Networks and Peacock.
