Nigeria’s female basketball team, the D’Tigress, has made Olympic history, becoming the first African team, male or female, to reach the basketball quarterfinals. The team defeated Canada 79-70 to achieve the feat. Canada, ranked fifth globally, leaves the competition without a win, having lost both of their other games. Nigeria, now with a 2-1 record, previously only had one win in the 2004 Athens Games. The achievement is even more impressive given the team missed the 2016 Olympics and went winless at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. Their next opponent is the United States, which is aiming for an eighth consecutive gold medal. Besides the Nigeria vs US matchup, the quarterfinals will see Australia take on Serbia, Spain take on Belgium, and France take on Germany for a spot in the last four of the competition.
