It’s hard to believe, but Samsung has already released five generations of its flip-style folding phone.
The latest of these – the Galaxy Z Flip 5 – significantly increased the size of the cover screen, but familiar shortcomings remain: average battery life, not-quite-flagship cameras and slow charging.
Will any of these be addressed on the upcoming Z Flip 6? Rumours suggest improvements to at least one of these areas, with a confirmed launch event not far away.
When will the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6 be released?
Samsung has confirmed that it’ll be holding a Galaxy Unpacked event on 10 July 2024.
Mention of “the latest Galaxy Z series” all but confirms that the Z Flip 6 and Z Fold 6 will be among the announcements.
Learn more in our separate articles on how to watch the event live and everything we’re expecting.
Assuming this materialises, it’ll be the earliest in the year that Samsung has ever launched a foldable, with 2023 models arriving on 26 July.
How much will the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6 cost?
Currently, we don’t have any confirmed information regarding the pricing of the Galaxy Z Flip 6. But here are the respective starting prices of its predecessors at launch:
As you can see, while pricing has remained consistent in the UK, it’s gradually become more expensive. That said, it’s worth noting that the base model of the Z Flip 5 arrived with twice the amount of storage of earlier models.
Will Samsung decide to increase prices on the Z Flip 5? It’s possible, though that will probably depend on how significant the upgrades are.
There’s also speculation that we might witness the introduction of two foldable models in each family instead of just one – a more premium Galaxy Z Fold 6 Ultra and a more affordable Galaxy Z Flip 6 FE.
According to a report from leaker Revegnus, Samsung is considering the release of Fan Edition versions of the Galaxy Z Flip 6. This typically follows a few months afterwards, based on the FE editions of Galaxy S models.
Although the alleged Galaxy Z Flip 6 FE is likely to arrive after the launch of the standard Z Flip 6 (as has happened with other FE models), Samsung may raise the price of this year’s model to then offer the FE version at a more affordable price.
What specs and features will the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6 have?
The Galaxy Z Flip 5 introduced several design changes, particularly with the new hinge mechanism and larger cover screen.
It is likely that Samsung will further enhance these aspects, especially the hinge, as the company has consistently focused on improving its durability.
But ultimately, we don’t expect any major changes from its predecessor.
Design
The Galaxy Z Flip 6, as shown on a leaked image from Samsung’s Kazakhstan website (via GSMArena), maintains a similar design to the Z Flip 5; with its characteristic dual camera and folder-shaped cover display.
The main upgrade seems to be an increase in the cover display size from 3.4 inches to 3.9 inches, allowing it to sit closer to the cameras than before. This change might enhance the user experience without drastically altering the phone’s overall design.

Renders of both Galaxy Z Flip 6 and Z Fold 6 shared by Evan Blass on X line up with the image from Samsung’s Kazakhstan website and seem to further confirm the design:
According to renders from OnLeaks (via SmartPrix), the Galaxy Z Flip 6 measures 165.0 x 71.7 x 7.4 mm when unfolded, compared to the Galaxy Z Flip 5’s dimensions of 165.1 x 71.9 x 6.9 mm. That increased thickness may be attributed to a larger battery.
The additional thickness could also aid in reducing the crease by allowing more room for the flex hinge, consequently alleviating strain on the display when folded.
The Galaxy Z Flip 6 is also depicted in Lavender and Mint colours. Both hues are similar but not identical to their counterparts on the Galaxy Z Flip 5.
According to display industry insider Ross Young, the Galaxy Z Flip 6 will come in Light Blue, Light Green, Silver, and Yellow. It is possible that Samsung will offer even more colour options or even introduce a new one, but it is not certain at this point.
A report from a Dutch tech site GalaxyClub, also unveils a new technology poised to debut in future Galaxy Z Fold and Z Flip devices. Given the timing of this listing, it’s reasonable to expect that the upcoming Galaxy Z Flip 6 will incorporate this so-called “Ironflex” technology.
Although the listing doesn’t provide a detailed description of the technology itself, it does reference a “foldable OLED display panel,” indicating its applicability not only to smartphones but also to tablets, laptops, and smart wearables. Hence, it’s plausible to deduce that it pertains to foldable screens. Considering the name, it is likely associated with the hinge mechanism and its durability. At this point, however, we don’t know more about it.
Displays
Regarding the inner display, it seems it will remain the same size as before, measuring 6.7 inches diagonally.

Similarly, the cover display will probably retain its 3.4-inch size, with no rumours to the contrary at this stage.
Performance
The current Z Flip 5 boasts the impressive Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor, Qualcomm’s most capable smartphone chip at the time of launch. We now have a successor – in the form of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 – and it’s highly likely to power the Z Flip 6.
While there’s also an option for the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4, the Gen 3 looks set to take the helm. The device was spotted on the Geekbench database (via MySmartPrice), with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 ‘Made for Galaxy’ chipset (variant built between Qualcomm and Samsung that boasts a higher clock speed than the standard chip) and paired with up to 8GB of RAM.

Even so, there’s always a possibility that it also could potentially be powered by one of Samsung’s own Exynos chips instead. This speculation stems from tipster Revegnus, who suggested the possibility of the Exynos 2400 being included in the upcoming Z Flip 6. Considering Samsung’s recent approach with the Galaxy S24 and S24+ offering both Snapdragon and Exynos variants, there’s a chance the company might depart from its tradition of using Snapdragon chips exclusively in its foldable devices.
The maximum storage option for the Galaxy Z Flip 5 is 512GB, so it’d be nice to see Samsung introduce a 1TB storage option, especially as the line has never offered microSD expandability. But any changes to the current 8GB of RAM seem unlikely.
Cameras
GalaxyClub claims that an early prototype model of the Z Flip 6 includes a substantial improvement to the main camera. It’ll supposedly now sport a 50Mp sensor, up from 12Mp on the Galaxy Z Flip 5. Recent renders from OnLeaks (via SmartPrix) also seems to show the same change.
Additionally, the Camera FV 5 database (via MySmartPrice) also revealed support for a 12.5Mp resolution imagery, with pixel-binning tech; which could be our previously-tipped 50Mp primary camera, with an f/1.8 aperture.
No leaks or rumours have emerged regarding the other cameras. Until we hear otherwise, it’s safe to assume that the 12Mp ultrawide and 10Mp selfie cameras will remain from the Flip 5.
Battery & charging
The Z Flip 6’s predecessor had a 3700mAh battery. While it’s not certain if Samsung will increase the size of the battery this year, a recent entry in the FCC database (again, via MySmartPrice) claims that the Z Flip 6 will feature a 3887mAh cell (rated capacity), but the company might market it as a 4,000mAh battery. If true, the phone will feature a battery that’s 296mAh larger, compared to its predecessor.
For reference, although the Z Flip 5 delivered all-day battery life, charging was where it really lagged behind, with maximum speeds of just 25W (and no charger in the box), it only reached 40% charge in 30 minutes. That now looks unlikely to change, based on reports that the UL Demko certification obtained by the Z Flip 6 confirms support for the same 25W charging speed once again (according to MySmartPrice). With this in mind, it probably won’t get any improvements to the 15W wireless charging and 4.5W reverse wireless charging, either.
Software
The Z Flip 6 is likely to run Samsung’s One UI 6 software, which is based on Android 14. There are a few Flip-exclusive features on the Z Flip 5, so hopefully more will be added to its successor. There is also a small chance that Android 15 will be available by the time the Flip 6 launches, which could mean even more new functionality, but it’s still too soon to confirm.
