Social media provides a lot of amazing opportunities for people around the world to connect. It also allows celebrities to show their real personalities to fans. But the other side of that is learning how our favorite stars feel about politics and hot button issues like race, reproductive rights, LGBTQ+ inclusion and gun violence. It can be an unfortunate revelation to discover that your favorite singer believes in wild, unsubstantiated conspiracy theories.
We’ll always advocate for free speech, but we don’t need everyone’s opinions on everything. If there’s one thing we’ve learned from our time on the internet, it’s that sometimes you can just keep scrolling and move on with your life.
Maybe more stars should take a cue from GloRilla, who gave the perfect answer when asked about politics during a recent appearance on CNN.
The rapper was recently invited to the White House for a celebration of Women’s History Month, where she met President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris. Though she may not have much in common with the powerful leaders, the Memphis rapper was still very excited to meet them.
“It was so cool, I was geeked,” she told CNN. “Everybody don’t get to meet the President and the Vice President, so just being able to be in the White House, I never in a million years thought I’d be in the White House. Then I was in the White House and got to meet the President and Vice President? Oh, they can’t mess with me
When she was asked about endorsing the president or any political issues they discussed, she had a hilarious response.
“That ain’t got nothing to do with me,” she said before referencing the Jill Scott classic “Golden,” singing, “I’m just living my life like it’s golden.”
“I’m not gonna talk politics, I love the president, I love everybody. But at the end of the day, the day gotta end,” she added.
First of all, we need that last line on a t-shirt because it’s brilliant. Second, if she doesn’t want to “talk politics” there’s nothing wrong with that. Maybe she just wants to focus on new music without social media chiming in on everything she says?
Yes, it makes a powerful statement when informed, passionate celebrities use their influence to highlight important social issues. However, the key word there is “informed.” Sometimes we wish more stars would recognize politics is not their jam and leave it to those who feel strongly about certain issues.
