Two men managed to escape from the Immigration and Customs Enforcement detention facility in Aurora, according to officials from the agency. Geilond Vido-Romero, 24, was taken into custody by ICE in Castle Rock on February 26 after being contacted by officers at the Douglas County Jail. He was awaiting deportation to Venezuela. Joel Jose Gonzalez-Gonzalez, 32, was arrested by ICE on February 12 after they encountered him at the Adams County Jail in January. He was awaiting immigration proceedings.
It is unclear why the men were initially arrested in Adams or Douglas counties. There is no district court case for Vido-Romero, and Gonzalez-Gonzalez’s case was dismissed without any charges being filed, according to court records.
ICE notified local authorities of the escape, but they declined to assist in the search efforts, as stated in a released statement by agency officials. In addition to the escape, more than 100 people gathered outside the Denver Contract Detention Facility on Tuesday to protest the arrest of immigration activist Jeanette Vizguerra.
As of now, the two men remain at large, and the search for them is ongoing, according to ICE. Sign up to receive crime news directly to your inbox each day for more updates on this developing story.
