The city of New Orleans was rocked by tragedy on Sunday as two separate shootings along a parade route and celebration left two people dead and 10 others wounded. The incidents occurred in the St. Roch neighborhood, a popular area located outside the French Quarter.
The first shooting took place shortly after 3:30 p.m. when officers responded to reports of gunfire and found eight victims with gunshot wounds. All eight individuals were taken to hospitals, with a ninth wounded person later arriving via a private car. About 45 minutes later, another report of gunfire came in as revelers were crossing the Almonaster Avenue Bridge, resulting in one person dying at the scene and another dying at a hospital. A third victim was driven to a hospital in a private vehicle and is currently in stable condition.
Police have not made any arrests in connection with the shootings and have not released any suspect information. The St. Roch neighborhood was the scene of the tragedy, with the Almonaster Bridge being closed in both directions for the investigation.
Police Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick stated that detectives are unsure if the two incidents are related, noting that they were different in nature. The shootings occurred during a “second line,” a celebration following a parade, in the area where the events were taking place.
This heartbreaking event comes on the heels of another major shooting in the South, as gunfire marred a homecoming weekend at Tuskegee University in Alabama on Nov. 10, resulting in one fatality and 16 others injured, with a dozen of them sustaining gunshot wounds.
Authorities are continuing their investigation into the New Orleans shootings, and the community is left grappling with the senseless violence that has struck their city. Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their loved ones during this difficult time.
