Namibia Poised to Become a Major Natural Gas Producer
The National Petroleum Corporation of Namibia (NAMCOR) has unveiled ambitious plans to potentially produce over 2.5 million tons of natural gas annually, following recent discoveries since 2022.
At the Namibia International Energy Conference, Mtundeni Ndafyaalako, Executive of Upstream Development & Production at NAMCOR, discussed the corporation’s strategy to capitalize on these findings. This includes a focus on legislative frameworks for infrastructure development and expanding exploration activities to uncover more resources.
NAMCOR’s gas monetization strategy project aims to attract new players and investments by outlining clear pathways for commercializing gas. Manfriedt Muundjua from BW Kudu emphasized the importance of local content integration in gas development, including training, skills transfer, and local procurement.
Drilling of additional wells at Kudu is planned to start in October, supporting NAMCOR’s commitment to ongoing exploration. Paul Eardley-Taylor of Standard Bank highlighted the need for public-private partnerships to address energy shortages in southern Namibia through gas utilization.
Wood Mackenzie’s Ian Thom expressed confidence in Namibia’s ability to implement a comprehensive Gas Master Plan, emphasizing the potential of gas to increase energy access across various sectors. Looking ahead, the African Energy Week conference in Cape Town will showcase Namibia’s gas developments and broader African energy opportunities.
